Things to Do in Salt Lake City

My Personal Favorites
I spent the better part of my undergraduate years in the Salt Lake City area. There’s a lot to do and see in Salt Lake. If you’re an outdoorsman, you have the Wasatch Front right on your doorstep. If you’re more of a city slicker, Salt Lake City has a lot to offer for urbanites too. In this Hub I thought I’d distill Salt Lake City down to the essentials. These are places I would gladly go again if I ever head back that way, and that I think shouldn’t be missed by newcomers.
They’re in no particular order, and feel free to skip any of them if you’re not into the same things I am.
With that said, let’s begin!
Whatever your religious views, Temple Square is a sight to behold. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints keeps immaculate grounds around their Temple, and a visitor’s center for those curious or with even a passing interest in the history of the Salt Lake Valley. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir often performs at the Tabernacle nearby.
If that doesn’t suit your taste, the Lights on Temple Square during the Christmas season are beautiful, and horse and carriage rides around the square will let you and your loved ones see the sights of Temple Square in a whole new way.
If you’re into skiing or snowboarding, the Snowbird Resort is my favorite. Just under an hour outside of Salt Lake, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort has it all. Even in the summer there’s lots to do. From ZipRiders to horseback riding to the alpine slide, there’s always a lot going on over there.
I learned how to snow board at Snow Bird. The hills are well paced and there’s plenty to enjoy for both beginners and experts.
One of Salt Lake’s many shopping malls, the Gateway mall is a huge open air mall with over 105 different stores.
Among other things, the Gateway Mall hosts the Clark Planetarium, where they often host rock and roll laser shows (I saw Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) and other cool things.
If you need something to eat in Salt Lake, the Red Iguana Mexican restaurant is a great place to start. It’s Tex-Mex to be sure, but the Red Iguana incorporates a lot of traditional foods like mole into its cuisine that gives the place a more authentic touch.
It’s not a large place, but it’s seriously busy during peak hours (like lunch). Try to hit it up during the off-hours.
If you’re a fan of independent music or just can’t let go having a hard copy when you buy, Slowtrain is one of Salt Lake’s best independent record stores. It’s small and cozy, but has a great selection. They often host live music and the owners are knowledgeable and friendly.
If you’re into indie music, do your duty! Support your local independent record store!

Utah has an excellent symphony that has a lot to offer fans of classical and popular music alike. From Mendelssohn to Randy Travis to Disney favorites, there always something going on over there.
I saw them perform the score from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, with custom art from Tolkien artist John Howe projected over the orchestra and choir. It’s worth a stop if you have a taste for live music.
If you’re willing to drive a little bit south, Provo Canyon is an excellent place to visit. The Canyon’s Trail is great place to ride, bike, hike, or longboard your way through some of Utah’s beautiful scenery. Stop by and visit Bridal Veil Falls, and take advantage of all the barbecue pits and parks along the way. It’s truly one of my favorite places on Earth.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg. There’s just so much to do in the Salt Lake valley.

I have done pretty much all these things in Salt Lake, but by far my favorite was to visit Temple Square.
